Going on Six : 8 : Artist

This about the funnest (yes, I know) age to watch your child’s artistic talent develop. My Little has pretty much spent her whole fall break drawing, painting, and cutting out various shapes of paper. Cutting, taping, glueing.

Of course the nazi mama in me is so tempted to focuses a lot on the mess that comes with creativity: glue globs, paper confetti, scotch tape balls, and stickers stuck to the bottoms of my feet. But then I catch myself and catch a breath and give praise that this child is sitting still and focused for more than three minutes.

But I won’t dismiss the fact that raising an artist comes with a lot of clean up. More paper drawings than space on the wall. More paintings than magnets on the fridge. And we HAVE. TO. KEEP. EVERYTHING. (Except the 90% of the fresh sheet of white paper with a random shape cut out of it in the middle. Somehow those always get stuck in the trash.)

I do know that every child develops at different points in their life, and some, like me, never quite develop fully in the visual artistic sense. But it’s okay because that just means we excel in different areas. 🙂

But for right now, I relish in the fact that my Little has blossomed artistically. Her stick figures with claw-like fingers have bloomed into chubby hands with even more chubby fingers. The triangular dresses have evolved to long, flowy evening gowns with a choice of strapless, straps, or sweater shoulders. The thin-lipped smile has matured into a puckered up set complete with a smattering of red lipstick. And occasionally, we get to see scenery, a background, and a fully outfitted sky.

Ah, the joys of going on six.

And now, I’m off to the store for more printer paper and scotch tape. At this rate, it may not be long until we become a  couple of starving artists here.
