Fashion. I can honestly admit that I lack any sense in relation to that word. Although I was put in pretty dresses as a little girl, the moment I got a chance to choose my own clothes, t-shirts, shorts, and jeans were staples in my wardrobe and they pretty much took up the entire closet space. As much as I longed to look like those cool kids on tv, my body and our budget just couldn’t keep up with the trends, so I just stuck to the basics.
My first two children were blessed with an abundance of clothes being the first boy and girl in the family. My middle child looked up to her brother so she didn’t mind when she got to wear some of his hand-me-downs. In fact, she looked rather cute sporting dinosaur and Transformer shirts. She also has her share of dresses and skirts, which she cycles through, but because she’s on the taller side, it often means adding a pair of leggings to the mix, so on hot days, she ditches the “fancy” wear for more comfortable clothing.
Then, there’s Little. She’s definitely got her own style. I’m pretty sure it started in preschool. She insisted on wearing two different slippers (flip flops, to you mainland folk) to school, one on each foot. Then it went to one slipper and one Croc. Again, intentional, and I had to make sure the teacher knew so that they wouldn’t spend all day looking for the other side of the pair. Mix and match slippers soon turned into socks (which still happens to this day), but then came the day she became the boss of her drawers.
Little had gotten a bunch of new clothing for her birthday and Christmas, so she was so excited to wear something new EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. I think if it were quite possible, she’d look something like Joey from Friends…..
Perhaps it was the My Little Pony or Fancy Nancy influence, or maybe from watching too many Disney-ish shows, but the little one has a solid love affair with all things posh. The more glittler the better. Sparkles, jewels, stars, colors. You name it, she loves it. She is definitely the girlie girl in the family.
Now, call us a bit old fashioned, but short skirts and spaghetti straps are not really allowed out of the house (unless, of course, we’re going to the beach). And Little has a cute play dress with some thin straps holding it all up on her shoulders. So I suggest she wears a nice layering tee underneath and she should make sure she wears some bike shorts or something under there (because we all know how active five year-olds are, and what happens when you practice handstands in a dress). But she has a different plan….
Because she wants to practice soccer.
Oh, and notice the bracelets? On both arms? Well, some days, if she has her way (and if she can find anything, because Lord knows her accessories are hidden in every nook and cranny of her room and our house), she may very well get out of the house looking like this:
In a way, I’m excited to see where her fashion sense will take her. At the same time, I’m kind of scared too. But I find comfort in knowing that she is comfortable with how God created her and that she knows she is beautiful without makeup, jewelry, or fancy clothes. I have a feeling in the not-so-far-off future, this little one will be giving her mama a fashion tip or two. I may even hire her as my personal shopper! But for now, I’ll let her get away with wearing tie-dye, polka dots, and strips all in the same ensemble.
